The student has a very basic understanding of Spanish, with no grammar basis and limited vocabulary.


The student has basic knowledge of grammatical structures, and a level of vocabulary to master everyday situations. Can produce simple sentences, as well as formulate and respond to simple questions.


The student is familiar with frequently used expressions and conversation on routine matters, and can ask and respond to a wide range of simple questions. Also can discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various issues, give reasons and explanations for opinions, and describe experiences and events.


The student has a good grasp of all essential structures and a decent level of vocabulary, and can apply both with accuracy. Can communicate effectively and appropriately in most situations. Also has a good understanding of the tense system, and can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity.


The student has sound knowledge of a wide range of language structures and functions, as well as considerable passive knowledge, with the need to expand active usage. The student can understand subtle nuances of the language as well as produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of structural patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.


The student can communicate spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations. Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation.
